From the Mitchell World Atlas of 1874, this map of Nevada and Utah is a hand-colored beauty. Fine art prints are beautiful and will outlast the originals. A great gift of history.

Utah and Nevada from the 1874 Mitchell Atlas of the World, 2 year's before to Custer's Last Stand, and prior to statehood by over a decade. The area is rugged and geographically diverse, located at the convergence of three distinct geological regions: the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, and the Colorado Plateau. Mountains, rivers, the Pacific RR, and early travel routes are all visible on the map.

The legalization of gambling and lenient marriage and divorce proceedings in the twentieth century transformed the state of Nevada into a considerable tourist attraction. The tourism industry remains Nevada's largest employer. Gambling was officially legalized in 1869 and abolished again in 1910. Mining was for the most part the state's chief industry. The Great Depression, however, brought a decline in the mines and Nevada's economy was in shambles. Gambling was legalized again in 1931 in attempt to lift the state out of the hard times of the depression. A year later, divorce was also legalized. Las Vegas was established in 1905 and would gradually become what it is today: the gambling and entertainment capital of the world.

In Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints reached the point of security by 1852 where they felt comfortable practicing polygamy. The principle of plural marriage had always been openly practiced, but it wasn't until that year that the Mormon leader Brigham Young felt secure enough to announce the practice to the world. The United States government, however, threatened the church's legal standing. In 1873, polygamy was outlawed by the Congress of Utah. In 1890, the Church President Woodruff announced the church's official abandonment of the practice.
