A map showing the advantages of shipping from Portland, Maine. Portland was a full day closer to Europe than Boston in the days of “Sailing Ships”. This map acclaims with questionable accuracy every advantage for investors in the upcoming City and Port of Portland. Rail connections and Canals were planned. All this came to an abrupt end with the fire of 1866. The venture capitol moved to Boston and history tells us the rest.
